The Charters Towers Regional Council has urged pet owners to take precautions to protect their furry friends as parvovirus (parvo) season approaches.
Parvo is a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus that poses a significant threat to dogs, especially puppies and unvaccinated animals.
Known for attacking the gastrointestinal system, parvovirus spreads rapidly, causing severe illness marked by vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, lethargy, and fever.
The Charters Towers Regional Council took to social media to share handy tips for protecting puppies from Parvo.
Tip 1: Vaccination is Vital: Make sure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations. Puppies should start their parvo vaccinations as early as 6–8 weeks and continue as directed by your vet.
Tip 2: Keep Spaces Clean: The virus can survive in the environment for months. Regularly clean any shared spaces, especially if you have multiple dogs or visit public areas.
Tip 3: Avoid High-Risk Areas: During peak seasons, be cautious about taking puppies to dog parks or heavily populated areas until they are fully vaccinated.
Canine Parvovirus outbreaks are most common during the warmer months, particularly in spring and summer.
The virus tends to thrive in these conditions due to higher temperatures and increased humidity, which can enhance the virus's ability to survive and spread in the environment.
