After 25 years of dedicated service to the community and visitors alike, Alan and Cherylle Hamilton have announced the sale of Affordable Gold City Motel, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the beloved establishment.

It started out as a “crazy bargain too good to miss” for Alan when they first took over the well-known motel in 2000, just one week before the town’s biggest event of the year, the Goldfield Ashes. Reflecting on this, Cherylle says, “to say the least, it was a steep learning curve for Alan and I who did not come from a motel background at all, and really quite laughable.”

“Add to this, we had one week to move into the motel, and I had just started a new job at Columba Catholic College, as well being in the midst of sewing gowns and making a decorative cake for a bridal party.”

“But we’ve managed. Our goal was to make it a ‘home-away-from’ for travellers and in particular busy contractors, like we had been for 15 years beforehand, and ensure they could access a good meal after a long day and relax. I find it just amazing that over our time here we have had such loyal patronage with not only repeat guests, but even their children and grandchildren. It makes me a bit emotional.”

And it is this kind of heartfelt approach that has also made the decision to sell a difficult one.

“But we are confident we have found the right buyers who can move forward another step and maximise the potential of the property, leaving our guests in good hands,” said Cherylle.

Stepping into the role of new owner is Julia Evans, along with her partner Chris, who was drawn to Affordable Gold City Motel because of a passion for hospitality, and chance to contribute to the community.

“I love creating spaces where guests can feel at home,” Julia said. “I also see great potential in this property and plan to add some modern updates.”

In a message directed at the motel’s past and future guests, Julia said, “we’d love to welcome new and previous guests, and whilst we are eager to make some exciting improvements, we are committed to maintaining the warm, welcoming atmosphere you’ve come to know and love with Alan and Cherylle.”

In a parting comment true to form, Cherylle encouraged people to get behind the new owners. “People don’t always see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes, so please support the motel’s new owners, Julia and Chris.”

The official handover took place on 1 April 2025.
