Charters Towers City

The Charters Towers Regional Council has highlighted disaster management resources after tremors from the 4.4-magnitude Townsville earthquake shook North Queensland.

The tremors caught many locals off guard earlier this month, but a representative from the Charters Towers Regional Council has provided resources to help prepare for future earthquakes.

The representative shared several websites locals can use for personal disaster preparedness.

“Information regarding Earthquakes can be found within Council's Local Disaster Management Plan,” the representative stated.

“Get Ready Queensland has a number of resources available to the public to assist in both being prepared for an Earthquake, and to assist communities during the aftermath should an earthquake occur.

“These resources include steps to take to reduce your risk before an earthquake, what to do during an earthquake, steps to take following an earthquake, as well as Geoscience Australia's role in around the clock monitoring, analysis and alerting of significant earthquakes to the emergency management sector.”

Although the risk of severe tremors in the Charters Towers region is generally low, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake recorded in Ravenswood in 1913 rivaled Queensland’s second-largest quake at 6.1.

Get Ready Queensland provides detailed tips on how to stay prepared, with many visual prompts from Australian NRL legend Johnathan Thurston.

There are currently no anticipated earthquakes which could impact Charters Towers.
